Supposed condition of hair suddenly turning white Marie Antoinette syndrome is a supposed condition of hair suddenly turning white. The name originates from folklore about the hair of Queen Marie Antoinette of France turning stark white after her capture following the ill-fated flight to Varennes throughout the French Transformation. According to the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), witnesses declared that Antoinette's hair rapidly turned white on 3 occasions. [] [] An example of this syndrome, albeit fictional, is from the Tokyo Evil spirit manga, where the lead character Ken Kaneki's hair turns white after being tortured for ten days.

The syndrome has been hypothesized to be a variant of alopecia areata diffusa or autoimmune non-scarring loss of hair that selectively affects all pigmented hairs, leaving only the white hair behind. Marie Antoinette syndrome is triggered by high levels of psychological tension, which, in turn, causes less coloring of the hair. [] These form the basis of the majority of uses of the idea in fictional works.

The research study concluded that over-activation of the considerate nerve system was triggering stem cells to stop producing pigment cells in hair follicles. History [edit] The earliest enduring taped claim of abrupt bleaching of the hair is represented in the Talmud, by a story of a Jewish scholar who, at the age of 17 years, established white hair locks due to overwork. [] Once in a while, contemporary cases of sped up (though not sudden) hair-whitening have been documented, as with battle victims in the Second World War, [] and in a case covered in the medical journal Archives of Dermatology in 2009.
